Born in Salamanca, Spain. Member of the Juan de Grijalva
expedition that explored the coast of Yucatan. Later participated with
Hernan Cortes in the conquest of Tenochtitlan. In 1527 was authorized by
Emperor Charles V to conquer Yucatan as governor and captain general. His
son Francisco (1508-1565), who served as page to Cortes, inherited these
titles after accompanying his father on the campaign. The son later founded
the cities of San Francisco de Campeche and Merida.
