U.S. senators arrive in Cuba
HAVANA -- (AP) -- Three U.S. senators arrived Friday in Cuba on
a visit aimed at
improving relations between the two countries.
Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., led the delegation that included Sen.
Daniel Akaka,
D-Hawaii, and Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said authorities at the
Interest Section
of the United States in Havana.
The aides said the delegation intends to address issues involved
in normalizing
relations as well as show support for lifting a trade embargo
imposed by
Washington.
With Elian Gonzalez back in Cuba, Fidel Castro's government has
renewed a
campaign against decades-old U.S. policies, like the embargo.
The congressmen are expected to hold a press conference Sunday
afternoon
before their departure for Washington.
After arriving at the airport, the group was met by Vicky Huddleston,
head of the
Interest Section in Cuba. Legislators declined to comment, but
aides said the
legislators hoped to meet with President Fidel Castro.
