Sadness prevails on third anniversary of Trisakti shooting

JAKARTA (JP): Sadness was the prevailing mood at
the Trisakti University campus in Grogol, West
Jakarta, on Saturday as students and university
members commemorated the third anniversary of the
shooting incident on May 12, 1998, which killed four of
                 its students.

The ceremony, held at the Reform Hero Monument in
the university's compound, was led by rector Thobi
                 Mutis.

Many participants at the ceremony, mainly family
members of the four victims -- Elang Mulia Lesmana,
Hafidin Royan, Hendriawan Sie and Heri Hartanto --
burst into tears when the university's choir sang Gugur
Bunga (The Falling Flower) and several students
hoisted the red-and-white flag to half mast.

The incident centered on the shooting by an unknown
group of troops at the students, killing four of them.

Until now, no security officer has declared
responsibility for the incident, while the legal process
seems to have met a stalemate.

Rector Thobi said in his speech that the university
insisted that the real shooters be prosecuted.

The students also planned to parade across the
capital to give flowers to people and passersby at
places such as the Semanggi cloverleaf junction, the
Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, the Slipi intersection, the
Senayan area, the Pancoran intersection and the
University of Indonesia campus in Salemba, Central
                 Jakarta. (imn)
