Honduran congress turns violent
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) -- Lawmakers kicked over tables and chairs
and pulled out guns on the floor after legislative leaders proposed reducing
the
size of congress from 128 seats to 90.
Lawmakers of the National Party said the motion Thursday by the ruling
Liberal
Party never went to the floor for debate. The mayhem broke out before a
vote
was taken. Several legislators waved handguns in the air in anger. The
session
was suspended until Tuesday.
"The opposition lawmakers showed they are children in politics and they
don't
deserve their posts," said Rodrigo Castillo, vice president of the congress
and a
Liberal Party member.
The Liberal Party has 67 seats, while the National Party has 55. Six other
legislators are from minor parties. Honduras will hold general elections
in
November.
