GUATEMALA CITY - Two supporters of former Guatemalan dictator
Efrain Rios Montt have been arrested for allegedly shoving, threatening
and spitting on
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Rigoberta Menchu, authorities said
Friday.
The incident occurred as Menchu was entering an Oct. 9 judicial
hearing on whether Rios Montt should be allowed to run for president. He
was allowed to
do so, but lost the election.
The two women were arrested Monday, said a spokeswoman for the legal system, Mercedes Carpio. A third suspect remained at large.
Carpio said the three face charges of public disorder, threats and discrimination, and are eligible for release on bail.
Menchu won the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting the rights of indigenous peoples.
