Guatemalan radio host assassinated
GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) -- The host of a Guatemalan radio chat show
which aired callers' gripes with provincial government officials, has been
shot and
killed after receiving a spate of death threats, police said Thursday.
Jorge Mynor Alegria, a 38-year-old presenter for Radio Amatique, which
broadcasts from the Caribbean port of Puerto Barrios across Guatemala's
eastern Izabal district, was
killed near his house late Wednesday, a local police spokesman said.
"He had been receiving death threats for some time," the spokesman, who
could not specify the nature of
the threats, said.
A man was arrested in connection with the killing, he said. Alegria
regularly denounced alleged wrongdoings by Izabal district officials on
his weekday lunchtime show and
encouraged callers to the program to do the same, said one of five
remaining staff at the station, requesting anonymity. "Everyone said what
they thought," he said. "When
you put your finger in the wound, it hurts."
