Rebels blow up oil line in Colombia, police say
BOGOTA, Colombia -- (EFE) -- Guerrillas from the Revolutionary
Armed Forces of
Colombia, known as the FARC, blew up an oil pipeline Saturday
in the river-port
city of Barrancabermeja in northeastern Colombia, igniting a
massive blaze,
according to police officials.
The attack took place on the outskirts of the city, site of the
main industrial
complex of the state-owned Colombian Petroleum Co., which operates
the
pipeline.
Col. Jaime Eduardo Martínez, the acting police commander
in Barrancabermeja,
said that the explosion ruptured the pipeline, allowing oil to
spill out and causing a
fire with flames swirling 100 feet into the air.
The fire threatened neighborhoods on the northeastern edge of
the city, but was
brought under control after several hours through the efforts
of firefighters,
company technicians and police, Martínez added.
He blamed the attack on an urban cell of the FARC, the country's
largest rebel
group, and said that police have yet to determine what type of
explosive was
used.
