EU to consider adding FARC to terror blacklist
MADRID, Spain (AP) -- The European Union agreed Friday to consider
adding the leftist guerrilla group the Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia, or FARC, to its terrorist blacklist.
Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Pique told reporters that EU leaders were
responding to a personal request from Colombian President Andres Pastrana
during
the first day of an EU-Latin America summit.
"We all feel that the FARC is a terrorist organization," Pique said, adding
that the EU
would make a decision on adding the group "soon."
"It wi ll be done in a short period of time, if it is possible, in the
next meeting" of
EU diplomats and experts that regularly update the list, Pique said.
Pique said the summit's conclusions would include a strong statement on
fighting
terrorism.
The 15-nation bloc put another right-wing Colombian militia on its list
released May
3 but left out the country's two main leftist guerrilla groups, the FARC
and the
National Liberation Army, or ELN.
Pique said the ELN would not be added to the list at the next EU review.
He said the differences between the two guerrilla groups was based on the
fact that
ELN continues peace talks with the Colombian government.
First drafted last December, the list was widened to bring it in line with
U.S.
terrorist blacklists drawn up after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Groups designated as terrorist by the EU could have their assets frozen in Europe.
