Rebels May Seek New Status
Special to The New York Times
HAVANA, July 7- The possibility that the Cuban rebels are demanding
“belligerent status” in return for the release of the kidnaped United States
sailors and marines is envisaged here.
Rebel sources say naval personnel will be held until it is possible
for their high command to talk with Ambassador Earl E. T. Smith or an official
of the United States State Department.
A report circulated in Havana that the rebels hoped to obtain
belligerent status from at least four Latin American countries within the
near future.
Five persons were killed and four wounded when a Cuban Navy plane
exploded and burned in a forced landing at Preston sugar mill of the United
Fruit Company in Oriente Province this afternoon, a communique from the
navy base said.
