HAVANA, April 8 - Encounters in Oriente Province between Government
troops and insurgents continues today, according to communiques from army
headquarters.
The communiques, issued last night and today, described the operations of small patrols and said five rebels had been killed.. At Niquero, on the south coast of Oriente, a group of rebels attacked a military post but the army said they were repulsed.
The headquarters also reported that a detachment of troops had surprised a group of rebels eating at La Reforma, near Holguin, in the northern part of the province, killing the leader and capturing some arms and ammunition. The rest of the band fled, the army said.
One rebel was reported killed in an encounter with troops on the highway near Bayamo. The army said three rebels were killed in a brief skirmish at Valre.
Another communique reported that troops at Cerro Palado had fired on a group of rebels guarding a number of vehicles which had been seized in the city of Manzanillo and were being prepared for use by the rebels forces. The army said the rebels retreated, leaving the vehicles.
