Cuba Police Arrest Man of Opposition
Special to The New York Times.
HAVANA, Oct. 9--The police are rounding up hundreds of opponents of the regime as the Nov. 3 election approaches. The arrests came in the wake of a number of bombings in the city last week.
Police stations are jammed with prisoners, according to reports, although there has been no official word concerning arrests.
A wave of bombings in Havana and the suburbs during which thirty small bombs exploded, touched off the round-up. The bombs did little damage.
Authorities are said to be determined to have all terrorist elements in jail during the Havana elections.
Reportedly some ammunition and explosives are being received by the Cuban armed forces from Britain. Since the United States halted the supply of arms and ammunition to the Batista regime several months ago, munitions have been purchased from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Europe.
A traveler from Camaguey Province said yesterday that fierce fighting was going on between the rebels and Government troops in the districts of Baragua, Jucara and Majagua.
Nine rebels were killed in an encounter with government troops when they attempted to enter the village of Moa on the north coast of Cuba, an Army spokesman said this afternoon. One soldier was killed and two wounded, he said.
