Civilian Will Be
Executed Today by an Army Firing Squad

HAVANA, Cuba, May 7. – José Costello Puentes, a civilian, 30 years of age, was convicted by a court-martial in Santa Clara today of having killed Lieutenant Juan Alvarez, rural guard commander, during the battle of a bandit gang with armed forces. He will be killed by a firing squad tomorrow morning.
Costello is a native of Ranchuelo, Santa Clara Province, where his widowed mother resides. He will be the second civilian to be executed by a military firing squad in Cuba’s history.
