Two people killed in attack on Colombian union leader
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- Gunmen wounded a prominent union leader in a
wild shootout Friday in which a street vendor and another person were killed,
police said.
Wilson Borja, president of the Federation of State Workers, was being treated
at
a Bogota hospital for his wounds, which were not believed to be life-threatening.
One of Borja's bodyguards was also wounded, according to radio reports.
A woman who sold coffee on the sidewalk was hit by stray gunfire and died
at
the scene of the attack in northwest Bogota.
The body of another person was found, but it was not clear if he was one
of the
gunmen or a bystander, said police Gen. Jorge Enrique Linares.
Police in the capital were hunting for the killers, who fled in a car.
Colombia is being torn by a war which is polarizing society. Right-wing
paramilitary gunmen are battling leftist guerrillas and often target those
they
believe to be rebel sympathizers.
