VOA Sports
A Cuban judo player has tested positive for a banned substance at the
Athens Paralympics and is being stripped of his gold medal.
The International Paralympic Committee said 35-year-old Sergio Arturo
Perez, who is visually impaired, tested positive for an anti-inflammatory
agent after winning the under 60-kilogram weight class on September 18.
The Committee decided to take back the gold medal and issue him a warning, but did not sanction him further. The drug he used is not a performance-enhancing substance in judo, but it is banned.
The Paralympics are the world's premier sporting event for disabled athletes. Nearly 4,000 athletes from 136 nations are competing in 19 events in Athens, including athletics, swimming and wheelchair tennis and basketball.
