Bus plunges from road in Peruvian Andes, 9
dead and 27 injured
LIMA, Peru (AP) -- A passenger bus caught in a rock slide in the Peruvian
Andes went off the road and tumbled down a 130-foot ravine Friday, killing
at
least nine people and injuring 27, police said.
The accident occurred between the highland cities of Tarma and Chanchamayo,
125 miles northeast of the capital, Lima.
Police said the rock slide was let loose by heavy rain. The driver reportedly
lost
control after a rocks struck the windshield.
Six bodies had been recovered by Friday evening, and rescue workers were
attempting to retrieve three more victims from inside the twisted wreckage,
police said.
Authorities said the injured passengers were treated at hospitals in three
nearby
towns.
