Arrested gunman implactes Oviedo, Cubas in Argaña assassination
Asuncion, Oct 29 --(EFE)-- A gunman arrested for the assassination
of
Paraguayan Vice President Luis Maria Argaña fingered former
President Raul
Cubas and former army commander Gen. Lino Oviedo for masterminding
the
slaying, it was reported Friday.
Pablo Vera Esteche, 32, was arrested on Oct. 23. Police did not
announce Vera's
arrest until Thursday, however, when they took Vera to court
for a deposition.
Prosecutors questioned Vera, who has an extensive crime record,
for more than
eight hours before he left late Thursday night, protected by
a sizable deployment
of special security forces.
After leaving Judge Jorge Bogarin Gonzalez's chambers, Vera managed
to tell
reporters that Argaña's murder was authorized by Cubas
and Oviedo.
Two legislators - Rep. Conrado Pappalardo and Sen. Victor Galeano
Perrone -
whose whereabouts are unknown, supplied the money for the crime,
according to
Vera.
Vera told Prosecutor Marco Alcaraz that he and two other gunmen,
Fidencio
Vega and Luis Rojas, were paid a total of 300,000 dollars to
kill Argaña.
Vera also fingered Maj. Reinaldo Servin, who was arrested last
week, as the
person in charge of hiring the gunmen.
Mobs of angry Paraguayan citizens called on Cubas to resign following
Argaña's
assassination in March. Cubas bowed to the pressure and fled
Paraguay days
after the murder and is currently living in Brazil. Oviedo fled
to Argentina, where he
sought political asylum. EFE
