Panama mudslides kill nine

(CNN) -- A torrential rain shower has triggered massive mudslides in Panama's capital, killing at least nine people, according to the country's Civil Defense Authority.

Thirteen others are missing.

President Martin Torrijos visited the affected areas Friday night and called it "an afternoon of great tragedy."

Three of the dead are brothers who were killed when the mudslide entered their home.

Panama City's highly-populated residential district of San Miguelito was the worst-hit area.

Torrijos promised to assign a task force to assist those in need. Several sites were set up for donations and to distribute food and clothing.
