MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -- Some 8,000 Mexican women, many of them
Zapatista rebel sympathizers, peacefully took over a Chiapas radio station
Wednesday to demonstrate for the rights of women and indigenous Indians,
authorities said.
In commemoration of International Women's Day, the protesters interrupted
programming for about half an hour at the station in San Cristobal de Las
Casas, capital of the southern state of Chiapas, where on January 1, 1994,
the Zapatista rebels launched an armed insurrection against the government
over indigenous rights.
The women, dressed in traditional clothing and accompanied by children
and husbands, came to Chiapas from outlying communities for the
demonstration. Local officials reported no disturbances.
