20 injured in Mexico prison riots
BERRIOZABAL, Mexico -- Scores of young prisoners threw stones and set
off homemade bombs in two days of rioting at a youth detention center in
southern Mexico. At least 20 people were injured.
About 400 police were brought in to control the rioting Monday and Tuesday
at the
Villas Crisol center in Berriozabal, 11 miles east of the Chiapas state
capital, Tuxtla
Gutierrez.
The youths, many of them high on paint thinner and liquid glue, said they
were
protesting poor living conditions that include bad food, dirty water and
a lack of
necessary medication.
Authorities said they had located at least four alleged leaders in charge
of instigating
the disturbances.
Civil protection officials confiscated 50 bags of glue and at least 20
bottles of paint
thinner and alcohol, and were keeping the center under a 24-hour watch,
said
agency deputy secretary Horacio Schoeder.
