Consulate of the United States,
Havana December 2nd 1851
Sir,
I, herewith, have the honor to enclose a paper written and signed by, Mr. J. S. Thrasher.
His friend, a Mr. Charles Tyng informed me that he had already forwarded two copies (to newspaper Editors in the U.S.) of this production.
What you will think of such a paper, it is not for me to say, but I must do myself the justice to inform you that I should not have thought of sending it except at the urgent solicitation of Mr. Thrasher, whose request, I do not feel at liberty to decline.
You will observer that Mr. Thrasher has “solemnly” affirmed, that he never had any connection with the parties who invaded this Island * If this be true, he has been unfortunate, & has done himself great injustice, for I believe I have not heard a person of respectability and candor speak upon the subject, who has not said that he believed Mr. Thrasher was very deeply implicated in the affair of the invasion of the Island.
I have the honor to be
Yr. Ob’t Serv’t
A. J. Owen
Honorable Daniel Webster
Secretary of State
of the United States
