Dear Mr. Tira,
I am writing to express my strong objection to Mr. Thomas Fiedler´s
recent comments about the Cuban-American community, at a staff meeting
of Herald
newspapers. Reportedly, Mr. Fiedler dismissed the audience of Radio
Mambi, the station with the largest audience in the Miami area, all Hispanic
and largely
Cuban-American, referring to us as the "22 people who listen to Cuban
radio." He also referred to us as dogs, in one case as "little chihuahuas"
and, if we
don´t like this, as "Boston terriers". I hope that you will agree
with me that Mr. Fiedler´s words and the racist sentiments they reflect
are totally
unacceptable and that he needs to understand that such words are simply
beyond the pale. No part of this or any other community deserves this treatment.
Mr. Tira, we need a strong and independent press, but one that respects
the community. Mr. Fiedler´s arrogant and racist comments do not
speak well for
the Herald newspapers. One would have hoped that after the recent blunders
by the management of the Herald papers, Mr. Fiedler would have learned
that, with
all the power at its disposal, no newspaper can prevail against the
communityh. Evidently, he did not learn this lesson. How are we to trust
the
fairness or accuracy of a newspaper when some of its top managers think
of us as dogs and inconsequential? The last thing the community or the
Herald
newspapers need is for cartoons such as the one I am attaching and
which is being circulated through the community. The Herald newspapers
and the Cuban-
American community need to work together to establish a strong and
mutually respectful relationship. I hope that someone can prevail over
Mr. Fiedler to
change his attitude so that we can begin to build such a relationship.
Sincerely,
Enrique T. Rueda
