Hillary Clinton opposes Elian residency drive
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday opposed
congressional action to make Elian Gonzalez a resident of this
country, putting
her at odds with Vice President Al Gore.
''Hillary Clinton knows that we must take politics out of this
decision,'' said Clinton
Senate campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson. ''Elian's future should
be determined
as quickly as possible through the appropriate, ongoing legal
process.''
The first lady was upstate Saturday to pick up labor-union endorsements
in her
Senate race against Republican New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Gore, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, urged Congress
last
week to pass a law that would grant permanent resident status
to 6-year-old Elian
and some family members.
Clinton's position on Elian also put her at odds with Giuliani,
who maintains that
the boy should be granted U.S. citizenship and that any custody
issues should
be handled in family court.
President Clinton remains opposed to the citizenship measure.
