HAVANA, June 22 – Big placards of the Twenty-sixth of July movement headed by Fidel Castro, rebel leader, appeared this morning in Santiago de Cuba.
Some of the placards, posted on various monuments and in parks read, “Viva Fidel Castro!” Others said, “We Have Come Down From the Sierra Maestra to Put These Up. Come and Get Us.”
Santiago de Cuba is the capital of Oriente Province in eastern Cuba and center of rebellious activity against the Government of President Fulgencio Batista. Government troops are pursuing Señor Castro and his forces in the mountains.
In other developments, Tobacco Week in San Juan y Martinez in the province of Pinar del Rio was suspended today because of the disturbed political situation.
The summer session at Havana University has been canceled for a similar reason.
For the last sixteen years, the university has held a six-week session each July and August. But the university council fears to resume classes because of the rebellious attitude of a large group of students.
The university has been closed since last November when students who have long combated the regime of President Fulgencio Batista created serious disorders.
