HAVANA, Jan 18 – Ten men were killed and three wounded early yesterday when Government troops fought briefly with insurgent forces.
The clash occurred at La Plata in the Sierra Maestra on the south coast of Oriente Province.
According to a communiqué from Army Headquarters in Havana, eight rebels and two members of the armed forces were killed and three service men were wounded.
This was the first indication that any insurgents of the short-lived rebellion in Oriente Province remain in the hills. Military authorities called off a manhunt several weeks ago after having killed or captured an unannounced number of rebels.
President Fulgencio Batista of Cuba informed the Inter-American Press Association yesterday that his Government hoped soon to re-establish constitutional guarantees.
The association had asked that censorship be lifted immediately. The Batista Government Jan. 15 suspended civil guarantees for forty-five days and established strict press censorship.
