Uruguay to reestablish diplomatic relations with Cuba
MONTEVIDEO, November 10 (PL).—Tabaré Vázquez, the president elect of Uruguay, has announced that his administration is to reestablish its diplomatic relations with Cuba, broken off in April 2002 by the current government of Jorge Batlle.
The leader of the progressive forces was speaking after a meeting with the principal leaders of the leftist Frente Amplio (FA), an organization now headed by the former University rector, Jorge Brovetto.
Vázquez communicated to his FA co-leaders that “moves” have been made in the last few days so that on March 1, when he assumes the country’s presidency, diplomatic links with Cuba can be reestablished.
That restoring of relations will be a motive for rejoicing among Uruguayans, one of the leaders accompanying the newly elected president told Prensa Latina today.
In that context, the principal political figures on the left here highlighted the solidarity that Cuba has always had with the Uruguayans, which dates back – they recalled – to the harshest years of the military dictatorship (1973-1985).
The new administration headed by Vázquez is part of the winds of change blowing through the Latin American continent and, in that context, the same sources commented how Cuba is demonstrating to the world the role of young people in this process, reflected in many of its actual representatives.
