General elections in October for People’s Power delegates and deputies

PRESIDENT Fidel Castro has convened general elections of delegates
for the municipal and provincial assemblies of People’s Power and
deputies to the National Assembly in three months time.

In accordance with the 1992 Electoral Law and the Constitution of
the Republic of Cuba, municipal representatives are elected every
two and a half years, whilst the term of office for provincial delegates
and National Assembly deputies is for five years.

Article 99 of that legislation states that elections should be notified no
less than 90 days in advance, which is why they will take place in
                   October.

Elections for municipal assembly delegates have been scheduled for
Sunday, October 20, 2002; the second round for candidates who do
not win 50% plus one of the necessary votes will be held one week
                   later on October 27.

The date for electing provincial assembly delegates and National
Assembly deputies will be announced in due course.
