Served: on the Northern Frontier, 1841-42, at Sackett's Harbor, N.Y., during Canada Border disturbances; in garrison at Fort Monroe, Va., 1842, --Ft. McHenry, Maryland, 1842-43, 1843-44, 1844,-- Carlisle Barracks, Pa., 1844-45-- and Ft. McHenry, Md., 1845-46; on Recruiting service, 1846; (First Lieutenant, 4th Artillery, June 18, 1846, to Feb. 14, 1856) in the War with Mexico, 1846-48, at Camargo, Mex.; as Act. Asst. Adjutant General of Rio Grande District, 1847-48; in garrison at Fort Polk, Texas, 1849-50,--and Ft. Brown, Texas, 1850-51; on Staff duty in the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.C., 1852-53; on Recruiting service, 1853; on Engineer duty in the Department of Texas, 1853; on frontier duty at Ft. Brown, Texas, 1853-54;--Las Animas, New Mexico, 1854;--and Ft. Brown, Texas, 1854-55; and as Assistant Adjutant-General (Bvt. Captain, Staff--Asst. Adjutant-Gen., Nov. 9, 1855) (Bvt. Major, Staff--Asst. Adjutant-General, May 14, 1861) (Major, Staff--Asst. Adjutant-General, August 3, 1861) in the Adjutant General's Office at Washington, D.C. Nov. 23, 1855, to Nov. 5, 1862.
Served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States, 1862; as Chief of Staff of Major-General Rosecrans, commanding the Army of the Cumberland (Lieut. Col., Staff--Asst. Adjutant-General, July 17, 1862) in the Tennessee Campaign, Nov. 13 to Dec. 31, 1862, being engaged in the Battle of Stones River, Tenn., where, at a critical moment, when the Commanding General, with his Staff, dashed forward to restore the tide of battle, which was turning against our arms, he was, by a cannon ball, instantly killed, Dec. 31, 1862: Aged 42.
