Omega Suspect gets 5-year term
A Cuban exile was sentenced yesterday to five years in prison for criminal contempt of court after being suspected by authorities as the triggerman in two murders connected to the Omega 7 anti-Castro terrorist group.
Pedro Remon, 39, of Miami, refused to testify before a grand jury probing eight years of bombings and murders for which Omega 7 claimed responsibility.
Assistant U.S. Attorney William J. Schwartz filed court papers charging that Eduardo Arocena, who is the suspected mastermind behind the violent activities of Omega 7, told the FBI that Remon served as the triggerman in two machine-gun murders.
Arocena is currently being tried in U.S. district court in New York on 26 counts that include first-degree murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, racketeering and perjury.
Federal authorities have not charged Remon with the two murders because of a lack of evidence. Arocena has refused to testify against Remon as a government witness.
