3 Latin businesses hit by gunfire
The front windows of three Little Havana businesses were shattered by gunfire, Miami police said. There were no injuries.
Damage was done at Empresas Hispamer, a pharmaceutical company at 2022 SW First St. that ships medical supplies to Cuba; Padron Cigar Co., 1566 W. Flagler St., whose owner met with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in 1978 to secure the release of political prisoners; and Trans-Cuba Inc., a now-defunct travel agency that once arranged trips to Cuba, police said.
Eduardo Padron was at his cigar factory when he heard glass shattering shortly after 9:40 p.m. Saturday and called police.
Five minutes before Padron's call, an anonymous caller told police a robbery was taking place at Empresas Hispamer. Police found the front windows broken.
About 10:45 p.m. Miami City Commissioner J.L. Plummer was passing by a shopping mall at 2742 SW Eighth St. and noticed windows of an empty storefront had been damaged. He called police, who said Trans-Cuba once did business there.
