Two in bomb trial get Ferre's 'blessing'

Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre has gone on record as a character witness for two Cuban exiles accused of making terrorist bombs.
The two suspects, Humberto Lopez Jr. and Luis Crespo [will appear before] Judge Arden Siegendorf and a jury of three women and three men. A third suspect, Joaquin Miranda, also is on trial.
In a letter dated yesterday to Judge Siegendorf, Ferre wrote. "I wish to enter on the record that I know the two defendants (Lopez and Crespp) and believe them to be men of good character standing."
The letter bears Ferre's signature and appears to be on his private stationery, with the address of 100 Biscayne Blvd. North.
Lopez, Crespo and Miranda are charged with illegal possession of explosives. Lopez and Crespo were both severely injured when an explosive device blew up in their hands in the garage of a home at 2344 SW 16th [missing line] today was Alfredo Sayus Jr., owner of the property where the explosion occurred.
